Finance Director

The Director of Finance will play a key role in supporting the Executive Director ensuring the basic essentials of food and shelter are available to everyone in need. To this end, the DF will manage the activities of the finance department, provide monthly financial reports, forecasts, and trend analysis for the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and its finance committee, and is expected to prepare and give reports to internal and external stakeholders.

The Director of Finance will join a six-member leadership team consisting of the Executive Director, Director of Housing Services, Director of Food Services, Director of Development, the Director of Communications, Events, and Volunteers.

General Responsibilities

  • Manage banking relationships and monitor bank and investment accounts.
  • Prepare financial reports and dashboards.
  • Evaluate, plan, and implement any needed technological improvements to financial systems’ software and hardware, working in close collaboration with external technology vendors related to finance and payroll.
  • Manage all insurance reporting and renewals.
  • Maintain corporate records, official documents and records as required by law.

Budget and Planning Responsibilities

  • Lead staff in developing agency budget and present the annual budget for approval by the Board of Directors. Partner in the development of department and grant budgets.
  • Partner in preparing financial reports for grant reporting and any needs reporting to private and government funding sources.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to design and implement financial strategies consistent with the organization’s strategic direction through trend analysis and forecasting.
  • Participate in finance committee meetings of the Board of Directors and help implement their directives; attend and report to the Board on finance, as required.

Expenses and Revenue

  • Track and report expenses and revenue.
  • Perform the organization’s financial day-to-day transactions including billing, banking, purchasing, reporting, budget monitoring and payroll.
  • Produce accurate and timely monthly financial reports and dashboards.
  • Manage accounts payable and ensure proper and timely processing of requisitions and check requests.

Audit and Compliance

  • Review, update, and maintain appropriate internal control procedures including accounting procedures manual and other systems necessary to prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting to internal and external sources as needed.
  • Serve as the primary internal contact during the preparation, actual, and post stages of the organization’s annual audit.

Payroll and Benefits

  • Process biweekly payroll and benefits administration for a staff of 25+.
  • Create and maintain employee records for benefits eligibility, insurance coverage, exemptions, changes in role/department, promotions, savings deductions, etc.
  • Research, implement, update, and administer employee benefits including health, dental, disability insurances, and retirement plans.

Education

  • BS in Accounting

Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience in nonprofit financial accounting
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting, creating, and managing budgets, forecasting, variance analysis, accounts payables, and payroll.
  • Proficiency in accounting software programs (i.e., Sage, QuickBooks, Blackbaud, etc.) and MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Experience in the management of public funds allocated through state, city and federal grants and contracts

Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with staff, contractors, vendors, consultants, and other external service providers as well as with all levels of staff and Board of Directors
  • Familiarity with appropriate local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Proven ability to see organizational big picture while attending to details.
  • Superior planning skills with the ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects Self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Open to new ideas and innovative or creative solutions.

Salary Range

  • $50K – $65K depending upon experience.

Building Maintenance Technician

The Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter, Inc. is searching for a Building Maintenance Technician. This is a new position. A successful candidate is one who is flexible and able to grow with the position.

General Summary:

Responsible for routine maintenance of all facilities and janitorial tasks. Maintain buildings and surrounding grounds in a clean, neat, and safe condition. Work is performed in accordance with standardized procedures or prior instructions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform needed maintenance on buildings and grounds, such as replacing locks and ceiling tiles, adjusting various pieces of equipment, minor plumbing and incidental electrical repairs, light carpentry, and painting;
  • Maintain grounds by performing a variety of tasks, such as pruning shrubs and trees, removing snow and ice, watering vegetable gardens and other tasks associated with grounds maintenance;
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and buildings, per established schedules;
  • Perform daily routine custodial and janitorial tasks, such as emptying waste baskets and recycling bins, washing windows, sweeping and washing floors, vacuuming and/or steam cleaning rugs and carpets, assist in the moving and/or disposal of furniture or equipment, clean and sanitize common areas, including bathrooms, community room, kitchens, laundry rooms, showers, hallways, stairways, and similar tasks;
  • Apply appropriate solvents and solutions, such as detergents, soaps, scouring powders, waxes, polishes, etc., according to best practice procedures;
  • May be required to work extended hours as needed to meet agency requirements;
  • Maintain the confidentiality of clients, volunteers, and staff in accordance with NSKS policies and procedures;
  • Maintain paperwork to include logs of work completed at each location;
  • Abide by all NSKS safety policies and procedures.

This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week, flexible hours. There is the possibility that this position will grow to require more hours. NSKS offers a flexible schedule, competitive starting wage, and excellent benefits.

Shelter Support, on-call

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide awake coverage for evenings and/or overnights of the emergency shelter.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and records documenting services.
  • Statistical data entry and report generation.
  • Provide safe environment in shelter by ensuring that all rules are followed.
  • Resolve guest problems according to established procedures.
  • Accept emergency referrals, complete intakes, and assign beds according to procedures.
  • Maintain general security of building performing house-checks and phone-checks as scheduled.
  • Answer telephone while on duty.
  • Complete hourly log entries.
  • Procure outside aid for emergencies as necessary.
  • Prepare bag lunches and snacks for guests.

Education and Experience

Experience in human services; dealing with low-income and homeless individuals as well as substance abuse and mental health issues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Duties require knowledge, understanding, and experience in working with persons experiencing homelessness. Ability to set limits, enforce rules, diffuse crisis situations, and use good judgment and initiative in problem solving are considered essential in performing the duties of this position. The ability to work with people of differing socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds is mandatory. Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, to communicate, and express ideas effectively. Have flexibility and a sense of humor.

On-Call Kitchen Staff

Requirements:

  • The ability to work with people of differing socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds
  • The ability to follow guidelines for meal prep
  • The ability to communicate effectively with volunteers
  • Oversee sorting and placement of daily deliveries
  • Coordinate meal service in a fast paced kitchen
  • Have flexibility and a sense of humor

Responsibilities:

  • Provide coverage for a Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry, as called, as needed
