Social Worker

General Summary:

Assist clients in ending the cycle of homelessness by moving them from unsheltered homelessness to appropriate housing and accessing necessary social service resources.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide individualized client support, using evidence-based case management tools, by helping each client develop a plan to address their barriers, increase their income, and maintain and sustain permanent housing.
  • Advocate for and assist clients in navigating the service delivery system, providing information and referral services as needed, and serving as a liaison with various social service agencies, including mental health clinics and hospitals, to ensure receipt of appropriate clinical and social services.
  • Maintain consistent contact with clients based on assessed needs, program policies, and funding guidelines. Client engagement will include home visits once housed. Client visits may include engagement on the streets, in parks, in encampments, abandoned buildings, etc., prior to housing.
  • Work collaboratively with case management professionals concurrently supporting clients to ensure ongoing coordination of services.
  • Work collaboratively with Outreach team members to provide on-call coverage, support surge capacity for encampment activities, surge capacity for disaster shelter coverage, and staff occasional street outreach events.
  • Develop and coordinate client care plans involving outreach staff and shelter staff in coordination with the Director of Housing Services.
  • Participate in community meetings and other activities as requested by supervisor or agency leadership.
  • Maintain accurate client documentation in Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) database in compliance with agency, COC, and HUD guidelines and expectations. Ensure all case files and other records strictly comply with policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Demonstrate care and develop significant trust with clients while maintaining strong boundaries in client relationships.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate social/peer support.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, direction, and supervision to all staff under your supervision.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • Accurately track and report hours worked in a timely fashion using agency provided tools.
  • Understand, believe, and advocate for the mission of the NSKS.
  • Maintain strict standards of client confidentiality.
  • Adhere to agency policies, procedures, and a professional code of ethics.
  • Assist in fostering good public relations of the agency.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings, staff training programs, supervisory sessions, and accept the responsibility for aiding in the development of positive team relationships.
  • Actively participating in ongoing training as needed in order to increase skills and to meet all certification standards and credentialing policies.
  • Schedule flexibility including early mornings and evenings to provide client services when needed.

Education and Experience:

  • Two or more years of experience providing case management with individuals or families experiencing homelessness or related fields either associated with degree program or independently.
  • Competence in diversion-focused mediation preferred.
  • Knowledge / familiarity with harm reduction, substance use disorders, and mental health disorders.
  • Interest in innovating how support is provided to at-risk and/or vulnerable populations most welcomed.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Building Maintenance Technician

The Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter, Inc. is searching for a Building Maintenance Technician. This is a new position. A successful candidate is one who is flexible and able to grow with the position.

General Summary:

Responsible for routine maintenance of all facilities and janitorial tasks. Maintain buildings and surrounding grounds in a clean, neat, and safe condition. Work is performed in accordance with standardized procedures or prior instructions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform needed maintenance on buildings and grounds, such as replacing locks and ceiling tiles, adjusting various pieces of equipment, minor plumbing and incidental electrical repairs, light carpentry, and painting;
  • Maintain grounds by performing a variety of tasks, such as pruning shrubs and trees, removing snow and ice, watering vegetable gardens and other tasks associated with grounds maintenance;
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and buildings, per established schedules;
  • Perform daily routine custodial and janitorial tasks, such as emptying waste baskets and recycling bins, washing windows, sweeping and washing floors, vacuuming and/or steam cleaning rugs and carpets, assist in the moving and/or disposal of furniture or equipment, clean and sanitize common areas, including bathrooms, community room, kitchens, laundry rooms, showers, hallways, stairways, and similar tasks;
  • Apply appropriate solvents and solutions, such as detergents, soaps, scouring powders, waxes, polishes, etc., according to best practice procedures;
  • May be required to work extended hours as needed to meet agency requirements;
  • Maintain the confidentiality of clients, volunteers, and staff in accordance with NSKS policies and procedures;
  • Maintain paperwork to include logs of work completed at each location;
  • Abide by all NSKS safety policies and procedures.

This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week, flexible hours. There is the possibility that this position will grow to require more hours. NSKS offers a flexible schedule, competitive starting wage, and excellent benefits.

Shelter Support, on-call

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide awake coverage for evenings and/or overnights of the emergency shelter.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and records documenting services.
  • Statistical data entry and report generation.
  • Provide safe environment in shelter by ensuring that all rules are followed.
  • Resolve guest problems according to established procedures.
  • Accept emergency referrals, complete intakes, and assign beds according to procedures.
  • Maintain general security of building performing house-checks and phone-checks as scheduled.
  • Answer telephone while on duty.
  • Complete hourly log entries.
  • Procure outside aid for emergencies as necessary.
  • Prepare bag lunches and snacks for guests.

Education and Experience

Experience in human services; dealing with low-income and homeless individuals as well as substance abuse and mental health issues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Duties require knowledge, understanding, and experience in working with persons experiencing homelessness. Ability to set limits, enforce rules, diffuse crisis situations, and use good judgment and initiative in problem solving are considered essential in performing the duties of this position. The ability to work with people of differing socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds is mandatory. Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, to communicate, and express ideas effectively. Have flexibility and a sense of humor.

On-Call Kitchen Staff

Requirements:

  • The ability to work with people of differing socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds
  • The ability to follow guidelines for meal prep
  • The ability to communicate effectively with volunteers
  • Oversee sorting and placement of daily deliveries
  • Coordinate meal service in a fast paced kitchen
  • Have flexibility and a sense of humor

Responsibilities:

  • Provide coverage for a Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry, as called, as needed
