Homeless Outreach & Coordinated Access

General Summary:

This position is responsible for providing assistance and advocacy in the Greater Nashua area for individuals experiencing homelessness and seeking emergency housing assistance and/or homelessness prevention.
 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Receive all incoming calls from homeless individuals, families, and homeless prevention agencies.
  • Gather all pertinent information on all calls.
  • Assess the situation and submit coordinated entry form to other providers/agencies.
  • Make necessary phone contacts with other providers for client assistance.
  • Assist clients with basic needs provided by the agency.
  • Assess immediate needs of clients, i.e. food, clothing, shelter. Assess crisis situations, determining level of life threat, and facilitate entry into appropriate level of care.
  • Assist clients in accessing housing subsidies, welfare benefits, SNAP, Medicaid, health insurance, and other entitlement programs.
  • Assist clients in locating affordable housing.
  • Work to prevent homelessness by mediating with landlords and utility companies.
  • Screen clients eligible for financial assistance from NSKS Revolving Loan Fund to prevent evictions and utility shut-offs; collaborate with financial assistance network of providers.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and records documenting services.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other agencies and act as a liaison to coordinate services for clients.
  • Assist clients with paperwork when needed.

Education and Experience

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Human Services or related discipline and/or 3 -5 years’ experience working with individuals with alcohol and substance abuse issues, the chronically mentally ill, and homeless persons. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Fluency in Spanish a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to work with people of differing socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Understanding of the issues associated with being chronically mentally ill and/or alcoholic and/or homeless. Good judgment and ability to set limits and enforce policies. Good communication and organizational skills. Flexibility and sense of humor. Respect for all individuals, regardless of their circumstances is required.

Shelter Support, part-time (2 positions)

We are looking to fill two part-time positions. One is for 30 hours a week, the other is for 10 hours. There may be additional hours available covering other shifts.
 

Essential Job Functions:

    • Provide awake coverage for evenings and/or overnights of the emergency shelter.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and records documenting services.
    • Statistical data entry and report generation.
    • Provide safe environment in shelter by ensuring that all rules are followed.
    • Resolve guest problems according to established procedures.
    • Accept emergency referrals, complete intakes, and assign beds according to procedures.
    • Maintain general security of building performing house-checks and phone-checks as scheduled.
    • Answer telephone while on duty.
    • Complete hourly log entries.
    • Procure outside aid for emergencies as necessary.
    • Prepare bag lunches and snacks for guests.

    Education and Experience

    Experience in human services; dealing with low-income and homeless individuals as well as substance abuse and mental health issues.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Duties require knowledge, understanding and experience in working with homeless persons. Ability to set limits, enforce rules, diffuse crisis situations, and use good judgment and initiative in problem solving are considered essential in performing the duties of this position. The ability to work with people of differing socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds is mandatory. Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, to communicate, and express ideas effectively. Have flexibility and a sense of humor.

Building Maintenance Technician

The Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter, Inc. is searching for a Building Maintenance Technician. This is a new position. A successful candidate is one who is flexible and able to grow with the position.

General Summary:

Responsible for routine maintenance of all facilities and janitorial tasks. Maintain buildings and surrounding grounds in a clean, neat, and safe condition. Work is performed in accordance with standardized procedures or prior instructions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform needed maintenance on buildings and grounds, such as replacing locks and ceiling tiles, adjusting various pieces of equipment, minor plumbing and incidental electrical repairs, light carpentry, and painting;
  • Maintain grounds by performing a variety of tasks, such as pruning shrubs and trees, removing snow and ice, watering vegetable gardens and other tasks associated with grounds maintenance;
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and buildings, per established schedules;
  • Perform daily routine custodial and janitorial tasks, such as emptying waste baskets and recycling bins, washing windows, sweeping and washing floors, vacuuming and/or steam cleaning rugs and carpets, assist in the moving and/or disposal of furniture or equipment, clean and sanitize common areas, including bathrooms, community room, kitchens, laundry rooms, showers, hallways, stairways, and similar tasks;
  • Apply appropriate solvents and solutions, such as detergents, soaps, scouring powders, waxes, polishes, etc., according to best practice procedures;
  • May be required to work extended hours as needed to meet agency requirements;
  • Maintain the confidentiality of clients, volunteers, and staff in accordance with NSKS policies and procedures;
  • Maintain paperwork to include logs of work completed at each location;
  • Abide by all NSKS safety policies and procedures.

This is a part-time position of 16-19 hours per week, flexible hours. There is the possibility that this position will grow to require more hours. NSKS offers a flexible schedule, competitive starting wage, and excellent benefits.

We have openings for both evening and overnight shifts.

On-Call Kitchen Staff

Requirements:

  • The ability to communicate effectively with volunteers
  • Oversee sorting and placement of daily deliveries
  • Coordinate meal service in a fast paced kitchen
  • Have flexibility and a sense of humor

  • Provide coverage for a Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry, as called, as needed
