Nashua Meals for Kids
A teacher reports a child having no more than a bag of Doritos for dinner. An after school counselor tells of a young boy saving up the school milk for the weekend to have something to drink. These stories and so many like them are unfortunately not the exception but the rule for too many of Nashua’s children.
40 percent of the children in Nashua Public schools receive free or reduced lunch. In the five elementary schools of Fairgrounds, Ledge, Amherst, Mt. Pleasant, and Dr. Crisp, 70 percent of the children are eligible. For Dr. Crisp, the number is as high as 80 percent.
According to Children’s Health Watch, “young children who experienced food insecurity as infants and toddlers are at a significant developmental disadvantage, upon entering kindergarten. Research on school-aged children reveals that food insecurity negatively impacts school engagement which translates to lower math and reading scores as well as impaired social skills.”
This summer, NSKS will be partnering with Corpus Christie, Ending 68 Hours of Hunger, the Salvation Army, and Southern New Hampshire Services to pilot an effort to ensure every child in our community has access to three meals a day, seven days a week. If you would like more information or are interested in volunteering for the Nashua Meals for Kids program, visit our website at https://www.nashuamealsforkids.org/
Summer is on its way and we need your help with our annual “Backpacks for Back to School” Program. We collect new back- packs and school supplies for families trying to live on minimum wage, staying at our shelters, or coming to the soup kitchen for food. Everyone loves this program and helping kids get ready for school. New backpacks & school supplies always bring joy to the approximately 2,000 kids who get them.
This year we are looking for donations to be dropped off between July 31 – August 3, Monday through Thursday from 10AM – 4PM. If you have items to donate and those times won’t work, email Carol at email@example.com. We will need volunteers to help us sort, organize, assemble and distribute. Go to our Backpack Program page for our School Supply List and more details.
Whole Foods Community Giving Day for NSKS:
Thursday, June 22nd
Whole Foods is one of our strong community partners. Every Tuesday through Friday, we pick up donations of food to help stock our Food Pantry and use in our kitchen for meals to help feed the hungry in our community. On June 22nd, the Amherst Street store will have a «5% Day». Five percent of that day’s net sales will be donated to the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter and help with our efforts supporting the Meals for Kids: ending childhood hunger in Nashua.

Tales from the front lines of hunger and homelessness in our community…
Today I went for a run (still trying to fill Lisa’s shoes!) and on the way back in I met a man named Lawrence. Lawrence has been a frequent donor to the Kitchen, dropping off food whenever he was able. He lives pay check to pay check and today, there was a fire in his apartment. He has a place to stay but he needed some food to get by. I should mention that he came by after our normal pantry hours but our pantry manager Richie opened everything back up and we made sure he wouldn’t be hungry for the next seven days.
Two weeks ago, our Hispanic advocate, Juana Fields, asked me if I was “handy” and I soon found myself assembling a stroller for a young mom with a toddler and another on the way. While her husband works in a local garage, she generally walks or takes the bus around town. She left knowing her growing family would be safe as they grow into the future.
I have been talking with an individual who has been struggling with mental illness. Sometimes, even getting to the Kitchen has been too much. It may have been the sun peeking out from behind the clouds but today was a better day. I got a warm smile and a ringing «This place is great!»
Not every day ends with sunshine. Times are hard for far too many of our family, friends, and neighbors. What I love about NSKS is that we are there, day in and day out, presenting love, compassion, and a hand for anyone and everyone in need.
I know that I’ve said it before but we really couldn’t do it without you!
