No one should be hungry or homeless in our community.
The Greater Nashua Community will be one that ensures that the basic needs of all its members are met in a sustainable, accessible, and dignified way. The Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter will provide food and shelter to vulnerable individuals and families in the Greater Nashua Region in a dignified and sustainable manner. NSKS works to increase access to a full spectrum of basic needs through advocacy, targeted programs and collaboration with other organizations.
My job cannot be done without the help of our donors & volunteers. Here are a few things some of our great volunteers and donors have done:
- I had a family of 3 come in for dinner. They were staying at a motel and walked with their young child to eat at the soup kitchen. They had a vehicle but one of the tires had a flat and they had no spare. One of our volunteers who was serving in the family dining area that day heard the story and offered to purchase a tire for the family.
- Volunteers purchasing, socks, hats, gloves, bottled water and deodorant then coming in monthly to provide these items to our clients.
- A Volunteer providing pants after one of our homeless clients kept coming in with torn pants.
- Volunteers feeding or holding a child during dinner while the parent goes quickly to the bathroom.
- Donors adopting our shelter kids during the school year to purchase clothes for school.
- SJH hospital donating money for us to purchase costumes for our shelter kids, so they, too, can go trick or treating.
- A donor providing a double stroller for a single mom with 2 small kids.
- A volunteer giving up his umbrella to a homeless man because it was pouring outside.
- A dinner volunteer purchasing a microwave for an elderly client after he came 3 straight Tuesdays to see if one had been donated.
- A volunteer going to their car and getting a blanket for a client after she heard me say I had given out all I had.
- Donor sewing comforters to make sleeping bags.
I can keep going on, with all the wonderful, compassionate gestures I see when I’m in our dining room on Tuesdays during dinner time. We have such great donors and volunteers— with hearts of gold. Thank you for all the selfless acts that you do, that I see and admire. – Juana Fields
27th Annual NSKS Run/Walk for Food & Shelter Fundraiser
Sunday, April 5th will be our annual fundraiser Run/Walk for Food & Shelter. We’ll have our 5K (included in the 2020 NH Grand Prix series!) and 10K run, a 3K walk and a Kid’s sprint. This will be the 5th year holding the NSKS Corporate Team Challenge: 1. A coveted rotating corporate cup for the company with the fastest 5K runners (Congrats to Results Fitness Center for winning in 2019) 2. An award for the company that raises the most pledge money (Congrats to our 2019 Awardee: First Church, Nashua for collecting $1,440.00) and 3. An award for the company with the most participants across all events (Congrats to Results Fitness Studio for having 32 participants on their 2019 team!). Registration to Run or Walk is open. 2nd Annual Heroes & Superstars Recognition Event
On December 8th, we acknowledged and celebrated some of our extraordinary volunteers and client success stories at NSKS. Congratulations to our Hero Volunteers:

Whether it was dropping a turkey or gift card off at the door, bringing in a trunk full of canned goods collected at the office, leaving bags full of handknit goods, volunteering with a group from work, mailing in a generous contribution, spending a moment online to send a donation, organizing a holiday fundraiser, helping with Christmas gifts or restocking our
Birthday Gift room — all of it made a difference, to us and recipients in need. Thank you!

A good Board is key to a healthy non-profit organization and these are the folks who deal with the nitty gritty issues of non- profit governance. Join Us at EMPTY BOWLS
You are invited to our 25th annual Empty Bowls event! February 19th (snow day is 2/20) at Nashua High School South. This is a wonderful community event showcasing many of the talents of our youth including their handmade pottery bowls & the student jazz band. The National Art Honor Society student members organize the event and a silent auction in the foyer. Nearly 700 clay bowls are made by students and faculty of both Nashua High Schools along with community volunteers. A bowl is then chosen by those who attend the event and is filled with donated soups. Our wonderful volunteers for the evening include NAHS members from our North and South High Schools, the South Jazz Band, along with teachers, staff and community members who pick up the soup, bread, and numerous donations.

THE NEXT STEP IN PROVIDING EMERGENCY SHELTER IN NASHUA – ONE YEAR LATER
This time last year, we were both proud and grateful to announce 35 Spring St. will serve as the new location for our emergency shelter program, the next step in providing comprehensive emergency services to the single adults and families experiencing poverty in our community.
We wrote then that we would commence with fundraising for the new facility. Our goal, after further consultation with the architects and engineers was revised to $4,600,000. I am happy to report that as of today, we have received commitments of $3,700,000!!!
To announce today that we are at 80% of our goal is remarkable. At the same time, we still have a ways to go. Your support is critical. Our March Newsletter will feature the Place to Call Home.
