It is an honor, a privilege, and just plain fun to be writing to you this morning. I have been so impressed with all I have seen, heard, and experienced over the past two months. Lisa is a force of nature and has helped us get to places many organizations only dream about. It is my hope that together, we can answer her call and build upon the foundation she created. Whether serving food in the kitchen or eating soup at Empty Bowls, running together in April or having a wonderful time at the auction, I look forward to meeting you and learning more about your aspirations for the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter and how we can serve the most vulnerable and most at risk.
Client Success Story
Before she left, I asked Lisa if she would share a story or two of the people she has met and the difference we have made in their lives:
A woman came through the pantry for fresh produce. Talking with her, I learned she makes her own baby food for her infant with healthy food she is able to receive from the pantry. Sometimes, she will get a fresh bag of spinach. Other times, there are apples from a local orchard. Every time, she knows there are no preservatives or additives and that her child will have a better chance to grow healthy and strong.
I met a woman who said she could not afford to buy fresh produce on her budget. The food she served at home was heavily processed and her son, a student at a local elementary school, hated vegetables. She has started visiting regularly. Knowing she can make it through the month brings peace of mind but what has happened to her son is priceless. “He has become the biggest fan of broccoli!”
The inspiration to act and to serve comes from many different places. For some, it is a religious or ethical calling and for others it is a sense of justice and being right with the world. For me, it is enough to know we made a difference in the lives of those two children. Little by little, we pass forward our good fortune.

Join Us at “Empty Bowls”
You are invited to our 22nd annual Empty Bowls event! February 22nd (snow-day the 23rd) at Nashua High School South. This is a wonderful community event showcasing many of our youth including their handmade pottery bowls & student jazz band. The National Art Honor Society student members organize the event.
Nearly 700 clay bowls are made by students & faculty of both Nashua High Schools along with community volunteers. A bowl is chosen by those who attend the event and is filled with delicious, donated soups. Our awesome volunteers for the evening include NAHS members from NHS North & NHS South, the South Jazz Band, the National Honor Society and many school staff and community members who pick up the soup, bread, & other donations. 24th Run For Food & Shelter
Sunday, April 9th will be our annual Run/Walk for Food & Shelter. There will be a 5K and 10K run, a 3K walk and a Kid’s sprint. This will be the 3rd year of the NSKS 5K Dell Corporate Challenge: a coveted rotating corporate cup for the company with the fastest runners in 5K. The Corporate Challenge also has an award for the company that raises the most pledge money & an award for the company with the most participants. Toyota of Nashua will be our title sponsor again this year (thank you so much!).

NSKS Board of Directors
The NSKS is fortunate to have a wonderfully dedicated group of individuals who serve on our Board of Directors. A good Board is key to a healthy nonproﬁt organization and these are the folks who deal with the nitty gritty issues of nonproﬁt governance. Our 2017 Board members include: Brian Cullen, President; Mary Slocum, Vice President; June Lemen, Vice President; Ray Mello, Clerk; Krishna Mangipudi, Treasurer; John Fisher; Janet Griﬃn; Kathie Feltus; Linda Kipnes; Michael J. “Jerry” Ryan; Rick Ruo; and Steven Harper. We also thank Kerstin Apfelberg & John Sullivan for their commitment and years of service on our Board.
Last year, 61% of the families with children in our emergency shelters moved to permanent housing. We currently have two families in our transitional housing program: a single mom with three children and a mom and a dad with two young children. All of them are working and in school.

- 320 kids participated in our “adopt a child” holiday gift program. A huge thank you to all our donors with a special nod to the employees at Fidelity.
- Thank you to everyone who helped make our Annual Dinner Auction such a huge success. We raised over $175,000 to support our programs. A huge round of applause for committee co-chairs, Kathie Feltus and Janet Griﬃn and the rest of the hardworking committee.
- 104 unsheltered clients have taken 172 showers (double 2015!) and 66 clients have done 77 loads of laundry at 2 Quincy Street.
- Volunteers planted and harvested over 525 pounds of produce and herbs to use in the soup kitchen and distribute in our pantry, 56 percent more than last year.
- Our Employment & Education Advocates, Tom and later Donna helped over 540 clients of whom 340 were in or found employment and 48 were going to school.
