Political Advocate / Caseworker

Seeking experienced individual with excellent communication skills (including social media) to coordinate advocacy efforts and social services to low-income/homeless individuals and families. Knowledge of area resources a plus. This 40-hour position offers salary in low- to mid-$30k range + excellent benefits. EOE.

GENERAL SUMMARY:
This dual position is responsible for the overall case management of clients, co-managing the distribution programs and collaborating with other agencies for client needs as well as addressing systemic causes of hunger and homelessness by involvement in the social and political systems that determine public policy and community attitudes.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Political Advocacy
- Attend hearings on legislation (State & City) that affect social policy on hunger and homelessness, as well as the larger issues of poverty and economic justice.
- Become acquainted with members of State Legislature representing Greater Nashua area and City Officials who create policies affecting the poor.
- Invite City and State Legislators to become familiar with NSKS and their constituents who use our services or are affiliated with the agency as staff or volunteers.
- Maintain regular communication with Board Members and other volunteers who are elected officials on the City and State levels.
- Become a member of related advocacy groups, including but not limited to the Housing Action NH, the Continuum of Care (connecting with legislative issues), and others that are relevant to the needs of our clients.
- Attend meetings of neighborhood organizations in the area served by the NSKS.
- Educate persons served by the NSKS of opportunities for their involvement in advocacy and the legislative process on a local, state and federal level.
- Inform persons served by the NSKS of meetings of neighborhood and statewide advocacy groups and facilitate their attendance when possible.
- Educate area groups on advocacy opportunities for their membership. Groups include but are not limited to Nashua Area Interfaith, school organizations, civic groups, church/temple social justice committees, etc.

Direct Service/Client Assistance
- Assess crisis situations, determine level of life threat and facilitate entry into appropriate level of care.
- Assist clients in accessing housing subsidies, welfare benefits, and other entitlement programs.
- Assist clients in locating affordable housing.
- Maintain client files and records documenting services.
- Make appropriate referrals to other agencies and act as liaison to coordinate services for clients.
- Assist clients with paperwork and resources for transportation when needed.
- Assist in coordinating donations and disbursement of toiletries, diapers, and household items as well as signups in food pantry.
- Assist in coordinating birthday gifts, school supply, and holiday gifts programs.
- Bilingual skills an asset.

Light Truck - Driver

We are in need of a driver for a 20’ refrigerated box truck used to pick up food donations for the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter. Responsibilities will include loading and unloading the truck; getting the vehicle serviced, cleaned and fueled; and interacting with donors, volunteers, and staff.

This is a part-time position of approximately 15-25 hours / 3-5 days per week, mostly morning hours. Starting wage of $12.00 per hour + benefits.

Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Good interpersonal skills are also essential.

DIRECT CARE, Part time, Shelter:

Looking for a part-time person to provide coverage of the emergency shelter.
 

Requires knowledge, understanding and experience in working with low income and homeless persons. Ability to set limits, enforce rules, diffuse crisis situations, and use good judgment and initiative in problem solving are considered essential in performing the duties of this position. The ability to work with people of differing socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds is mandatory. Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, to communicate, and express ideas effectively. Have flexibility and a sense of humor.

Requirements:

Duties
The ability to work with people of differing socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. Have the ability to follow guidelines for meal prep; to communicate effectively with volunteers; oversee sorting and placement of daily deliveries; coordinate meal service in a fast paced kitchen. Have flexibility and a sense of humor.

Responsibilities:

Provide coverage for a Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry, 

as called, as needed.

We have openings for both evening and overnight shifts.

Provide awake overnight OR evening coverage for an emergency homeless shelter, as called, as needed.
